Mirza Ghalib  Family

Mirza Ghalib was born in a royal family of Turkish origin, in the city of Agra in 1796. His parents were of Turkish royal ancestors. His parents died during his youth. Therefore, there was no one to guide him. He was married at the age of thirteen to a girl of a royal family.

It is said that they had seven children. None of them was able to live long. The Mirza Ghalib family consisted of two members- his wife and himself. His poems and letters express the sorrow and the pain he underwent during his life. He spent his last years at the Haveli in Delhi. He died in 1869.

There is not much information on Mirza Ghalib family life.

Many say that Mirza Ghalib’s wife Umrao Begum was a simple, religious woman of good upbringing. Their marriage life saw many up and downs. They had seven children, none of them stayed alive for a long time. There was no permanent income for the Ghalib’s family, as he had no job or work. He was one of the poet in the court of the Mughal Emperor and had many titles conferred to him.

One cannot say a lot about his education but many believe that he used to be with intelligent minds of that era. He used to spend the time with penning songs and letters in Urdu or spent time with his friends.

He was a gambler and had a drinking problem. He was not religious like his wife and was carefree.
